“The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and he helps me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise him.” Psalm 28:7
This verse was written by King David. I imagine him proclaiming these words after he finds victory from his foes, as God fought on Israel’s behalf. I imagine these words uttered from the soul of David as he was weary, on the run from King Saul, constantly fighting for his life, knowing only God could keep him out of harm’s way.
I also imagine the young King David using the words found in this verse to remind himself of where his strength comes from as he sees the enemy at hand, as Goliath stood on the battlefield taunting the Israelites.
Yet no matter just how large the enemy or circumstance was, he knew he served a God whose strength surpassed all.
“The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.” 1 Samuel 17:37
David didn’t have to rely on his mere human ability, but in a God that is the true source of strength. As God intervened on David’s behalf, he was filled with gratefulness and joy. This joy overflowed out of David’s soul and onto his lips. As a result, all those that heard David’s song were reminded of the goodness of God.
This is good news for us as Christians. We serve a mighty God, bigger than any hardship, diagnosis, broken relationship, or valley we may find ourselves in. He is the God of the universe, and in Him we can find our strength too.
Oftentimes in our surrender is where we see God’s strength most clearly.
Whatever you’re up against today, remember that your God is fighting on your behalf. He is your protection, your stronghold, your true source of joy.
