Shaped With Purpose

“Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand…” – Jeremiah 18:6 NIV

Growing up, my best friend’s grandpa was a potter. I remember watching him shape clay on a wheel for the first time. The clay started out as a formless lump, spinning fast and wobbling in every direction. But as the potter pressed in—it began to take shape. It became purposeful!

In Jeremiah 18, God tells Jeremiah to visit a potter’s house. There, God gives him an illustration: “Just like the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are you in mine.” What a powerful reminder that God is not distant or disinterested. He is hands-on, personally shaping our lives.

The truth is, sometimes we feel like that spinning clay—unstable, uncertain, or even crushed. But in the Potter’s hands, none of it is wasted. Even when the vessel is cracked, the Potter doesn’t throw it away. He reshapes it. He redeems it. He works it again into something beautiful.

Maybe life hasn’t gone the way you planned. Maybe there are parts of your story you wish you could redo. Here’s the hope: God isn’t finished with you. As long as we’re in His hands, He is shaping us with purpose.

So today, trust the process. More importantly, trust the Potter.

Reflection Questions:

  • Where in your life do you feel like clay on the wheel right now?
  • What would it look like to surrender that area to God’s shaping hand?
